For more than 150 years, safety has been fundamental to how Sempra’s companies operate, shaping how we serve customers, help protect communities and deliver the energy that one in ten Americans depend on every day.
As we advance our mission to build America’s leading utility growth business, safety is central to our decision-making. From investing in resilient infrastructure and preparing for extreme weather to supporting first responders and empowering employees to speak up, safety helps strengthen our operations and earn the trust of the communities we serve.
These efforts continue to evolve in response to increasing energy demand, wildfire risk and severe weather. Here’s a look at how our companies are preparing for the future while continuing to put safety into action every day.
Enhancing wildfire readiness and prevention
Wildfire seasons are becoming longer and more complex, requiring utilities to evolve how they prepare for and respond to risk.
At San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E), that means combining advanced technology, infrastructure investments and operational planning to help reduce risk and protect communities through a data-driven approach.
As part of this effort, SDG&E, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and the University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography recently announced Edge Alert Sentinel (EAS), a new collaboration to bring artificial intelligence directly to the front lines of wildfire and extreme-weather response. Designed to detect and analyze rapidly changing conditions in real time, EAS represents a new approach to environmental intelligence—processing critical data at the point of risk to help utilities and emergency responders act faster when time is of the essence.
A broader suite of tools—including weather modeling and predictive analytics—helps identify high-risk conditions and support timely decision-making, while ongoing system hardening efforts—including covered conductor and undergrounding—are designed to help reduce ignition risk during extreme weather.
When conditions warrant, Public Safety Power Shutoffs may be used to help prevent fires and protect communities. These efforts are further strengthened through close coordination with public agencies and other stakeholders at SDG&E’s Wildfire & Climate Resilience Center.
Reducing risk through year-round vegetation management
Vegetation management is a key part of wildfire prevention and overall system safety. Sempra's California utilities work year-round to maintain clearance around power lines and infrastructure to reduce hazards. Programs help customers make safer landscaping choices near electric lines. In areas where dry vegetation poses elevated risk, SDG&E is using nature-based approaches, including the use of a goat herd for targeted grazing, to help manage vegetation safely and effectively.
Preparing for extreme weather
In Texas, Oncor Electric Delivery LLC (Oncor), of which Sempra owns an 80.25% stake,1 helps strengthen grid resilience through year-round planning for extreme heat, severe storms and rising electricity demand.
This includes ongoing grid upgrades, equipment inspections and vegetation management to help maintain reliability. Oncor also monitors weather conditions closely and stages crews and resources ahead of potential storm impacts.
These preparations help position the system to respond quickly and safely to outages and other disruptions.
Emergency preparedness and coordination
Strong collaborations with first responders and public agencies play an important role in helping keep communities safe. Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) provides training and resources to emergency responders across its service area to support coordinated response efforts.
Across our family of companies, emergency response programs are activated during major incidents to coordinate in real time with local, state and federal agencies. Regular drills, planning and mutual assistance agreements help teams prepare to respond to wildfires, storms and other emergencies.
When significant events occur, our utilities work together with public agencies and other stakeholders to share information, coordinate resources and help restore service safely and efficiently.
Customer safety and education
Our focus on safety extends beyond the infrastructure we build and maintain. It also includes helping customers prepare for emergencies and make informed decisions before an incident occurs. From conducting ongoing leak detection and system monitoring to support the safe delivery of natural gas by SoCalGas to hosting community wildfire fairs by SDG&E to provide practical information, resources and access to experts, we are helping customers take steps to stay safe and be prepared for potential disruptions.
Together, these efforts reflect Sempra’s longstanding emphasis on safety. From our employees and contractors to the customers and communities who rely on us, helping to protect people remains central to our work. By prioritizing people, we're building stronger operations, more resilient infrastructure and the trust needed to deliver safe, reliable energy today and for generations to come.
