That theme anchored this year’s Strategy Day at Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC (Oncor), in which Sempra holds an 80.25% ownership interest. As one of the nation’s largest electricity transmission and distribution companies, Oncor brought together company leaders and stakeholders at the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, to review its long-term strategy, industry trends and efforts to support industry-leading growth in Texas.
At the center of the program was a dialogue between Sempra Chairman and CEO Jeffrey W. Martin and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, who formerly served as the 25th United States National Security Advisor. The focus of the discussion explored the intersection of leadership, rising energy demand and national competitiveness.
Drawing on their shared military backgrounds, the discussion highlighted why the role of energy infrastructure companies has taken on greater significance, particularly at a time when the stakes extending America’s competitive advantage in innovation and technology is tied to the successful roll-out of artificial intelligence.
Martin, who graduated with McMaster in 1984 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, highlighted Oncor as an example of what it means to operate with ambition — setting bold goals, making long-term investments and executing at scale to serve a broader purpose in society.
“Oncor is truly powering the potential of America,” Martin said. “Modernizing the grid is the foundational investment for the future growth of Texas and it will support the continued momentum of economic activity in this state.”
That ambition, McMaster emphasized, is set by a clear vision and mission — one that connects strategy to service.
“The most important thing for any organization is the vision that everyone commits to,” said McMaster, who pointed to Sempra as a clear leader in the energy sector with its disciplined approach to driving results that are essential to strengthening America’s economic competitiveness and energy security.
For Martin, that approach comes to life through people. True leadership, he noted, is not about individual success, but about creating conditions for others to thrive.
“That’s why at Sempra we measure success by how people around you succeed,” Martin said. “We aspire to have an organization where our employees are ambitious and well-resourced to bring forward new ideas and innovations that benefit our customers and communities.”
