SoCalGas Champions Restaurant Recovery with Additional $525,000 in Support for the Restaurants Care Resilience Fund
Grants will support equipment upgrades, employee retention, and deferred maintenance, for local-owned restaurants LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- SoCalGas today announced a second $525,000 donation to the California Restaurant Foundation's (CRF) Restaurants Care Resilience Fund. Last year, SoCalGas co-founded the Fund to help small businesses recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and was also a leading donor, committing $525,000 in 2021. Qualifying restaurants throughout SoCalGas' service area are encouraged to apply for a $3,000 grant starting April 15 th. These grants aim to support equipment upgrades, employee retention, and deferred maintenance, allowing small restaurants to recover after nearly two years of incurring debt, losses, and shouldering rising costs. The application period closes on April 30. "Restaurants and the families and employees that run them showed incredible resilience and strength as they adapted their businesses to serve all of us during the pandemic," said David Barrett, vice president and general counsel at SoCalGas and California Restaurant Foundation board member. "Last year's grants provided essential support to local restaurants as they struggled to keep their doors open. This year, grant funds will provide support for kitchens or crews, while overall supporting restaurant resiliency." "We are honored that SoCalGas has returned as a partner for this year's Resilience Fund, and extremely grateful they identified the program as being worthy of one of their largest charitable donations planned for this year," said Alycia Harshfield, Executive Director of California Restaurant Foundation. "SoCalGas' generous contribution will help independent restaurant owners across central and southern California invest in their people, their equipment and ultimately, the long-term health and success of their business." This year, the Restaurants Care Resilience Fund will award nearly $1.5 million in grants to small businesses in 2022. Last year, 318 restaurants statewide received grants including Rajas con Crema, in the City of Maywood, run by wife-and-husband team Alicia and Javier Solorzano, who opened their dream Mexican restaurant after more than 16 years in the catering business. The dishes are inspired by Alicia's travels, recipes from friends, and family, while adding her own touch. "We are extremely thankful to the California Restaurant Fund and SoCalGas for the grant, and for creating this fund to help local restaurants," said Javier Solorzano, owner of Rajas con Crema. "Our concern was to survive, and the grant helped us give back to our community in a time of need. We were able to donate warm meals to local families while paying for our employee's time. I highly encourage other restaurants to apply for this grant, it can make all the difference." "We are grateful to SoCalGas for their ongoing commitment to community and small businesses through this grant opportunity and many other efforts, including their food distributions in the City of Maywood and Southeast Los Angeles during the pandemic," said Maywood Mayor Heber Marquez. Another grant recipient from 2021, Natalia Pereira of Woodspoon, a Brazilian restaurant in downtown Los Angeles said, "The Resilience Fund is such a special program on so many levels-the people and the program are wonderful, and this initiative has such an incredible impact on the restaurant community throughout the region!" Woodspoon recently received the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand award that recognizes restaurants with "value for money." The Zagat-rated Shiro Restaurant in South Pasadena has been serving French food over 34 years and received a grant award last year. According to Shiro owner Irene Yokoi, "There are no words to express our gratitude for receiving your funds during our turmoil to cope with Covid-19 closures. It has helped us great deal especially for covering the cost of payroll." In addition to providing financial support to restaurants, SoCalGas offers programs and services for selecting energy-efficient equipment for any commercial customer. Restaurant owners can schedule a "try before you buy" equipment demo to test-drive gas cooking equipment before making a purchase, sign up for an energy survey by a utility expert, and receive information on rebates and incentives on qualified gas cooking equipment, water heating, heat recovery products and installation of eligible energy-efficient upgrades. Restaurants Care Resilience Fund applications will be open from April 15-30, 2022 and can be found at www.restaurantscare.org/resilience. Grants will be available to all California-based restaurant owners with less than three units and less than $3 million in revenue. Priority will be given to restaurants owned by women and people of color. Last year, the Resilience Fund awarded 318 grants to independent restaurant owners, 65 percent of which were women-owned and 83 percent person of color-owned. SoCalGas' partnership with the California Restaurant Fund is part of the company's ASPIRE 2045 sustainability goals, which includes a commitment to invest $50 million to drive positive change in diverse and underserved communities over the next five years. In addition to supporting the Restaurant Care Resilience Fund, in 2021, SoCalGas contributed $9.6 million in total community investment, $4.8 million to support health & human services, and $2.3 million to education causes. In 2021, SoCalGas' Fueling Our Communities program provided over 9,800 free meals, over 2,600 grocery bags, and 2,520 restaurant gift cards totaling $60,400 in support of 25 local restaurants. Sandeep Mor Q&A: developing strategic growth opportunities
Sandeep Mor is senior vice president of finance for Sempra. Mor is responsible for many aspects of Sempra’s long-term strategy, including mergers and acquisitions and development of strategic growth opportunities to help achieve Sempra’s goals. He also oversees the company’s treasury and cash management functions, as well as divestments and other activities related to corporate development in collaboration with Sempra’s three growth platforms. Previously, from 2013 to 2022, Mor held several leadership positions in corporate development and mergers and acquisitions for Sempra. Prior to that he served in a variety of other roles in finance and operations functions for the Sempra family of companies. Learn more about Sandeep Mor in this Q&A: As Senior Vice President of Finance, what are your responsibilities? The core of my responsibility is to further Sempra’s sustainability-centered long-term strategy, execute mergers and acquisitions and develop strategic growth opportunities to continue Sempra’s strong sustainability leadership. We have three high-growth business platforms and I enjoy partnering with them on business development and value creation initiatives. My role recently expanded to include the company’s treasury and cash management functions, and I look forward to working with these teams to further our sustainable value to shareholders. I’m also involved with many other Sempra initiatives and have the benefit of working with great peers who inspire me to be better every day. You played a leading role in the recent formation of Sempra Infrastructure. Why did Sempra decide to form this business platform and what are some of the opportunities there? Sempra Infrastructure (SI) combines two world-class infrastructure businesses into a single platform positioned to capture new opportunities to support the continued integration of North American energy markets. When we looked at how investors and Wall Street analysts were valuing IEnova and Sempra LNG, we noticed significant discount to their intrinsic value. In addition, the two entities had high degree of overlap and potential for business synergies. Our decision to form Sempra Infrastructure and seek to sell 30% of our ownership of Sempra Infrastructure Partners to KKR and ADIA was driven by four main objectives: Simplify and scale a single infrastructure platform; Improve Sempra’s balance sheet while establishing Sempra Infrastructure as a platform that can self-fund its growth; Highlight value to our owners; and Improve our EPS over the long term. I am very pleased with the outcome and investor reaction to this initiative. It was a true team effort and highlights the high-performing and innovative culture at Sempra. It’s a great feeling to be part of Sempra’s transformation in the past few years and to enter into agreements for approximately $35 billion in capital recycling to implement our strategy of focusing on transmission and distribution in some of the largest markets in North America. We could not have done it without the amazing corporate development and finance teams who are some of the hardest working, creative and collaborative people I have ever met. At Sempra, we recognize innovation drives the energy transition. What is your outlook on innovation and how are you able to consistently bring new ideas to the table? As our company grows, technology and innovation will increasingly play a critical role in improving the overall quality and affordability of the energy we deliver. At Sempra, we strive to be a leader in the energy transition and help the world achieve net-zero by 2050 through investments in leading edge technologies and development of novel solutions for our customers. Our three business platforms have been recognized several times for their technology and innovation. While renewables are powering the first phase of the energy transition, continuous innovation is needed to further reduce emissions particularly in hard-to-electrify sectors like transportation and industry. Utilizing both clean electrons and clean molecules can help advance the global energy transition and improve the resiliency of our energy systems. In addition to renewables and battery storage, liquified natural gas, renewable natural gas, hydrogen, carbon capture and sequestration are all playing critical roles in decarbonization. Similarly, digital technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing are critical to providing safe and reliable services to our customers. Continuing to innovate will require tremendous collaboration and significant investments across the energy value chain and our businesses are at the forefront of this change. Our values are do the right thing, champion people and shape the future. Which value resonates with you most and how do you incorporate that into leading your teams? Doing the right thing appeals to me naturally and I am very passionate about championing people, but the one value where I feel I can make the greatest impact is shaping the future. Our corporate development team lives and breathes this value every day by analyzing key trends and developments in markets, technologies and regulation, and assessing how these factors could create opportunities for our businesses. Similarly, our finance team influences the financial health of our company every day, identifying new opportunities to deliver value for our shareholders. Our ‘shape the future’ value has allowed Sempra to demonstrate strong earnings performance in the past few years and positioned our portfolio to capture significant future investment opportunities and generate strong shareholder value. We are witnessing the most exciting time in the history of the energy industry and our purpose and mission positions us to make a meaningful difference to future generations. There is no greater reward or inspiration than this.
Sempra advances climate action across Texas
The impacts of a changing climate can be felt across the state of Texas. Hurricanes and other extraordinary weather-related events have led to increased erosion, degradation of wetlands and heightened chances of flooding. These impacts also affect our operations and compel us to place sustainability at the center of our business strategy and recommit ourselves to building climate resilient energy networks while helping advance a better future for all through climate action. Habitat and ecosystem restoration is important because it can deliver positive ripple effects such as sequestering carbon, helping to prevent erosion and flooding, increasing species diversity, and reducing human-wildlife conflicts, all while improving livelihoods for people. In 2021, Sempra invested $6.6 million in climate action activities across our family of companies and the Sempra Foundation, including in Texas. Sempra supported purposeful nonprofits doing transformational work in sustaining the environment, including those committed to habitat and ecosystem restoration and helping to shape a cleaner future. This Earth Month, we shine a spotlight on three organizations supported by Sempra to help improve climate resilience in the Lone Star State: Memorial Park Conservancy Sempra provided $100,000 to the conservancy’s prairie restoration project. Today less than 1% of native Gulf Coastal Prairie habitat remains even though native prairies are more resilient than the forested habitat that exists in this area today. As a result of our grant, natural areas have been upgraded to help the park be more resilient to climate conditions and more hospitable to diverse vegetation and wildlife. Galveston Bay Foundation With a donation of nearly $150,000, Sempra is supporting the foundation’s efforts to add 73 acres of wetland restoration and shoreline protection in Dollar Bay – Moses Lake by planting over 60,000 stems of cord grass. This conservation effort is adding 47 marsh grass terraces of intertidal marsh complex to help protect and restore an area that has suffered from the harmful impacts of erosion, and is projected to help remove up to 38 tons of carbon dioxide every year. By reducing erosion, the wetlands can store more carbon from the atmosphere, reducing the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the restoration and habitat creation project across the various ecosystems in the region. Additionally, Sempra's funding is helping support an EcoCenter where the foundation seeds, grows and harvests marsh grass to support habitat restoration across the salt marshes, prairies and other aquatic ecosystems in the bay. Trees for Houston Sempra recently contributed almost $53,000 to plant 800 trees within MacGregor Park and the East End Management District. Now in its 38th year, Trees for Houston has planted over half a million trees in the greater Houston area advancing beautification efforts while also helping improve air quality for Houston's residents. Sempra’s mission to be North America’s premier energy infrastructure company drives us to do the right thing by working to reduce environmental harm and finding new ways to work with nature. Our energy behind Texas connects us with nonprofits that share our values and helps us shape a positive future for the communities we serve.
